
The first ever joint conference of the Australian Indigenous Communications Association (AICA) and the National Ethnic & Multicultural Broadcasters’ Council ( NEMBC) was held in Brisbane on the 10th-11th ofNovember, with great acclaim from participants in both sectors.
The theme Language, Culture and Identity was explored in talks and workshops as a central a part of the weekend’s activities. In the sharing of personal experiences around this theme they found common ground about the importance of community media in building community strength. The potential persuasive power of both sectors acting together in lobbying campaigns and raising awareness of both sectors was also noted.
Saturday evening saw several youth awards bestowed on programs from 6EBA in Perth and Radio Adelaide. The Indigenous program Whadjuk, for best new talent, was received by Ethel Wallam of 6EBA whilst Abraham Alier from Radio Adelaide accepted the multicultural youth program of the year award on behalf of their Neovoices program.
The Tony Manicaros award for excellence in ethnic community broadcasting was awarded to the Spanish Youth program Radionautas at Melbourne’s Radio 3ZZZ.Thenk you to you all who attended for making this a most valuable and enjoyable event.
