Welcome to the NEMBC 2024 Conference to be held in Adelaide 24 to 26 May 2024.

 

CONFERENCE THEME

Future Focus: CHARTING THE WAY FORWARD TOGETHER 

The community broadcasting sector is entering a new phase.

This conference will be future-focused, utilising the Sector Roadmap 2033 to identify and respond to emerging member and sector needs, new challenges, and our capacity to respond.

Together, we will evaluate the challenges, understand the common-cause, and take a leadership role in engaging with members and the sector to explore these challenges and pave the way forward.

NEMBC MEDIA AWARDS

How to apply for the 2024 NEMBC Media Awards

The NEMBC is pleased to announce that nominations are now open for the 2024 NEMBC Excellence in Broadcasting Awards.

These awards are in recognition of Ethnic and Multicultural broadcasters and their radio stations which:

  • Contribute to media diversity in Australia
  • Service the needs of ethnic communities
  • Display a dedicated endeavor to building stronger community ties
  • Raise the profile of Ethnic and Multicultural broadcasting, and
  • Indicative of a high level of skills through their production content

Closing date for applications: 5:00 pm on Monday 15 April 2024.

1. Best Radio Station: Metro, Sub-Metro, or Regional Station supporting Ethnic Community Broadcasters

The station is able to show how it supports Ethnic community broadcasters:

Your application will be judged on:

  1. The station has been and is a strong supporter of Ethnic community broadcasters.
  2. Proven dedication to promoting and encouraging practices supportive of cultural diversity in many aspects of station activities.
  3. The station undertakes activities raising awareness of Ethnic community broadcasting by reaching out to cultural groups within the community.
  4. The station is dedicated to programming that services most multicultural community needs.
  5. Station management is dedicated to progressive thinking in supporting diversity at the station.
  6. The station operates within the principles of community broadcasting.
  7. Consideration will be given to regional stations that have limited resources but meet the criteria.

How to apply:

A written application is required; the more material you provide, the better. Please provide the following information:

  1. A Summary of the Station’s activities: in 500 words or less.
  2. A detailed outline of the Station’s activities and how it has highlighted Ethnic and Multicultural community issues; was it one outstanding program or event or a consistent number of program activities, such as but not limited to:

    – Supporting different cultures in all aspects of station activities.
    – Supporting the maintenance of language, culture and heritage.
    – Supporting new and emerging communities.
  3. Explain how you raised awareness.
  4. Provide information about what programs you operate to service community needs.
  5. A summary of how board, management, and staff dedicate themselves to contribute to Station visibility and highlighting the positive outcomes of your services.
  6. Include as much material as you think is important, such as images, recordings, event reports, relevant documents, and media articles in support of your application.

2. Innovative Program of the Year

For the Ethnic program that showcases the most innovative content, style, and program making.

Your application will be judged on:

  1. The program covers issues that are underrepresented in mainstream media.
  2. Program content that is interesting and relevant.
  3. Taking a creative and innovative approach to content making for broadcast purposes.
  4. The program has a high technical quality.
  5. The program creates content displaying a thorough understanding of its target listening audience.
  6. The program shows wide distibution on radio and online.

How to apply:

  • Write a synopsis of the entered program in no more than 300 words.
  • Provide a 5-minute, MP3 of your program.
  • Provide photos and other support material inclusive of print and online publicity.

3. Volunteer Contribution of the Year

For the volunteer who has made an outstanding contribution to their radio station.

Your application will be judged on:

  1. Proven contribution to a community radio station in a volunteer capacity.
  2. Demonstrated guidance, effectiveness, and dedication to community engagement.
  3. The volunteer has made a positive contribution to station culture and the effectiveness of the station in carrying out its vision.

How to apply:

Please send your written application inclusive of providing material and images.

An MP3 is not required for this application.


4. Best Coverage of Women’s Issues

An award for the most comprehensive and relevant coverage on an issue relating to women featured on a community broadcast.

Your application will be judged on:

  1. Proven contribution to the community broadcasting sector on womens issues by a program or presenter broadcast on community radio.
  2. Proven establishment of an audience and listenership with proven ability to engage the wider community.
  3. Presents a regular program on community radio that shows qualities of good research, relevant and topical issues, understanding your listeners, providing relevant information, community awareness, and support for the community.

How to apply:

  • Write a synopsis of the entered program in no more than 300 words.
  • Provide a 5-minute MP3 of your program.
  • Provide photos and other support material inclusive of print and online publicity.

5. Best Coverage of Youth issues

Recognising a young program or presenter aged between 15–30 years for a radio program with a focus on youth and who has made an outstanding contribution to Ethnic community broadcasting. For the most comprehensive and relevant coverage on an issue relating to young people on a community broadcast.

Your application will be judged on:

  1. Proven contribution to the community broadcasting sector on youth issues by a program or youth presenter broadcast on community radio.
  2. Proven establishment of an audience and listenership with demonstrated ability to engage the wider community.
  3. Presents a regular program on community that indicates qualities of good research, relevant and topical issues, understanding of your listeners, provides relevant information, community awareness, and support for the community.

How to apply:

  • Write a synopsis of the entered program in no more than 300 words.
  • Provide a 5-minute MP3 of your program.
  • Provide photos and other support material inclusive of print and online publicity.
